Dr. Akhter Hameed Khan, an outstanding social scientist of our time, was recognized globally for his pioneering contributions to the theory and practice of poverty alleviation through social mobilization. His remarkable achievements include his work at the Rural Development Academy in Comila (Bangladesh), the Daudzai Integrated Rural Development Programme (IDRP) in NWFP and the famed Orangi Pilot Project in Karachi. He emphasized that no country could prosper unless the poor were made an integral part of the development process.
 

 

The principal objective of the AHKRC is to promote a macro and micro level understanding of the causes and processes of change in the rural areas of the south in general and of Pakistan in particular with the purpose of promoting the use of this understanding for developing and/or supporting rural development initiatives and programmes; influencing government, donor, media and NGO policies; and for facilitating the necessary human resource development to make this possible.

 

 
Devolution and Poverty
This article reviews Devolution of Power as an exercise in shifting power from one group of representatives to another group of representatives. Devolution of Power cannot achieve empowerment of ordinary people because it does not have any mechanism to subordinate the power of representatives to the power of electorate. Citizens have power to vote and elect but they have no power to check corrupt officials, sack corrupt politicians and challenge unjust decisions of people in public offices.

 
Shoaib Sultan Khan Archives
 We have an historic collection of Shoaib Sultan Khan, Chairman National Rural Support Programme. There are more than 1500 office folders having thousands of important letters, e-mails, faxes, NFRs and reports from office of Shoaib Sultan Khan. We at AHKRC Library are digitizing all the material so that it can be accessed through internet. This collection can be accessed by two methods:
 

     

For online books catalogue search, Online Public Access Catalogue has been developed, which helps the user in quick search for the required book which are available in the OPAC.

 

Beside other services the website provides Akhtar Hameed Khan, Shoaib Sultan Khan Archives, digital images, RSPs publications, journals & reports in digital format online.
